About AGSA

Recreation League Program

The Recreation League Softball Program (Rec League), in cooperation with the Ankeny Parks & Recreation Department, offers girls going into grades 1st through 8th, no matter their place of residence, the opportunity to play softball and learn fundamental skills and basic team concepts in a positive, relaxed, fun and enthusiastic environment.

The Rec League is designed for girls of all skill levels who want to play softball for the fun of it. All players are equally valued, regardless of their level of play. The Rec League allows girls to play locally, and all players are given equal opportunity to participate and are encouraged to play all positions. It also allows girls the opportunity to socialize and make new friends.

The success of the Rec League is dependent upon parental involvement through volunteering to be coaches, assistant coaches, team parents and umpires. The goal is to cultivate the participants love for the game of softball by teaching the basic rules and fundamentals of softball as well as promoting the ideals of sportsmanship, teamwork, and good character.

The main goal of the Rec League is for the girls to have fun. The Rec League is available in the fall with registration beginning in May and play beginning in August. Games are played on evenings during the week.

Registration for the Rec League may be done online at www.ankenyiowa.gov or in person at the Park and Recreation Department located at 210 S. Ankeny Blvd.  Their phone number, for questions related to the program, is 515-963-3570.

Competitive League Program

The Competitive Team Softball Program is designed for girls who wish to participate at a higher-skilled, more competitive level of play. Any girl who wishes to participate in Competitive Team Softball must reside within the Ankeny School District. AGSA sponsors teams in the 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U age divisions.

Each year the Ankeny Girls Softball Association conducts a competitive team try-out for all divisions in the fall and another try-out in the spring for any new players not already assigned to a team. After try-outs are completed, players will be assigned to a tentative team roster.

While the goal of the AGSA will be to place all players on a team, placement will depend on participation numbers and availability of coaches.

Participation in the Competitive Team Softball Program requires a much greater commitment, both from a monetary and a time standpoint. Competitive teams may play on a local, state, regional, or national level. Most competitive teams play softball for 10 to 14 weeks, which may include a spring league, weekend tournaments in April, May, June, and possibly July, and possible participation in the Iowa ASA State Tournament. In addition, depending on a teams success, they may qualify to play at the National ASA, USSSA, PGF, or AFA tournaments.

An optional fall league sponsored by Mid-Iowa Girls Softball (MIGS) is also available for competitive teams to participate in as well. Ankeny is a host complex for this league. This league typically runs from mid August through late September with games played on the weekends. The MIGS league is designed to be an instructional league to allow competitive team players the opportunity to further develop their softball skills in a more relaxed format.

The Competitive Team Softball Program is not associated with the Ankeny Parks and Recreation Department.

Registration for the Competitive Team Softball Program is done online on this web site and information will be posted prior to the tryout dates.
